“Whatever the defendant’s status under Spanish law and constitution, he is no longer a monarch or head of state, which would grant him personal immunity,” the court said. The court also says the suspected stalking has nothing to do with government or royal activities.

Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn has gone to court to seek substantial damages and to demand action against the alleged libel and threats of the former monarch.
According to legal documents, Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn had “an intimate romantic relationship” with Juan Carlos from 2004 to 2009. After the relationship broke down, they remained friends until the ex-king wanted to resume their relationship. When Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn “clearly stated she didn’t want this,” Juan Carlos allegedly stalked her. The woman accuses him of ‘organizing’ a series of malicious acts that caused her ‘fear and sorrow’.
Juan Carlos stepped down in 2014 and has been living in exile in the Emirates since 2020. He denies all allegations. A new hearing will take place on March 29.
