Without a club since the beginning of September
On Deadline Day, Jetro Willems terminated his contract with SpVgg Greuther Fürth, which originally ran until 2023. The 28-year-old ex-national player of the Netherlands joined the “Kleeblatt” from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2021 and played a total of 26 games (one goal) for the Fürth. The left-back has been without a club since the farewell – for now. “Give me two months and I’ll show it again: that I’m one of the best left-backs in the Netherlands,” said Willems in an interview with “Voetbal International“.
Willems explained that he made a conscious decision to leave Fürth at the beginning of September. He needed rest and time with his family. “I went on a bit of a hiatus to sort everything out for a while. I’ve had a few intense years. with my injury. After that I had no more time for myself. No time to take vacations, to be free. I had other options, offers. I also disappointed some Dutch clubs. I made my choice,” said Willems, who tore his cruciate ligament while serving at Newcastle United in early 2020.
Arias, William & Co.: The most valuable free players
In the meantime, the desire for a new football task is back. “I am busy preparing for a new club. I train from Monday to Saturday. Inside, in the gym. But also outside with the ball, for myself, on an amateur pitch in Rotterdam. I do coordination exercises while running and so on. All sorts of things,” said Willems, who can mentally concentrate on football again after the break. “That’s exactly what I needed.”
The left-back thinks this area of football is sometimes underestimated. “We should not forget that football is also a mental game. If that part isn’t right, it can affect your physical condition.” Willems continued, however, he hadn’t completely finished with football. “I don’t want to go that far. I’m not depressed either, mind you. But I felt it was time to take a step back. And I have the luxury of being able to do that.” Now the comeback is to follow. “I’m not ready yet, but wait and see what happens. Jetro Willems will be back.”
