Trained at Bayer Leverkusen
Former DFB junior Emrehan Gedikli (19) will play for Turkey in the future. The striker from champions Trabzonspor has been included in Turkey’s Under-21 squad for November’s friendlies against Austria and Poland. “It’s a great honor for me to represent our country,” Gedikli told Transfermarkt. His decision is “final”. Gedikli switched from his training club Bayer Leverkusen to Trabzonspor in February for a fee of 800,000 euros.
The striker had gone through all junior years at the DFB and was last in March part of the U19 selection for the games in the European Championship qualifier. “I’ve been contacted by the Turkish FA several times in the past, but I wanted to concentrate on my role in the DFB youth teams,” says Gedikli. With his move to Trabzonspor, discussions arose as to whether he would play for Turkey in the future. “For me, however, the topic has only become very present in the last few weeks, after I had several conversations with the Turkish national coach (Tolunay Kafkas; ed.), which went very well,” he emphasizes. His time at the DFB was “a very important and instructive part of my career”.
Gedikli made one game for Trabzonspor this season when he came on as a substitute against Sivasspor in the Supercup in July. Since then he has been waiting for his next assignment despite several squad nominations. Most recently, he was out of action due to a hard calf, but he will be back for the international matches with the Turkish U21s.
