Ex-BVB star Großkreutz announces a surprising change

A world champion in the 6th league: For ex-BVB star Kevin Großkreutz, the sport continues, but two leagues lower.

The former Bundesliga professional from Borussia Dortmund is moving from the regional league team TuS Bövinghausen to SV Wacker Obercatrop in the Westphalian league next season. The club from the Recklinghausen district announced this on Monday evening.

“I can hardly wait to be on the pitch with my new team and to write another success story for Wacker,” Grosskreutz is quoted as saying in a statement from the club.

The 34-year-old had previously lost his position as player-coach in Bövinghausen. “We had to pull the rip cord, there has to be a turnaround,” said club chairman Ajan Dzaferoski after the 3:7 against SG Finnentrop-Bamenohl on Sunday, in which Großkreutz saw the red card for an insult.

The coaching team was replaced on Monday because the goal for the season was in acute danger. According to Dzaferoski, the dismissal played no role. “The step had already been discussed in advance,” Grosskreutz told the “Bild”.

The TuS is in the Oberliga Westfalen on the same points as the reserves of the second division SC Paderborn on a promotion rank, but has not won any of their last five games.

Grosskreutz wants to continue to be available to the team as a player: “Of course I will continue and end the season properly.” The club also confirmed this.
