Regular force under Simeone
Axel Witsel will stay with Atlético Madrid beyond the season. The 34-year-old, who switched to the Rojiblancos last summer after his contract with Borussia Dortmund ended, told the TV station “ElevenSportsAn extension to 2024 confirmed. “So there is no longer any problem in this matter,” he said.
The Spanish daily newspaper “Marca” recently reported that Witsel was facing an automatic extension at Atlético. There was talk of a clause in the contract that would extend it by a year if the Belgian played a certain number of games: 25 over at least 45 minutes. To date, there have been 28 assignments across all competitions (one submission) and 23 of them for the allegedly required duration, but according to Witsel, the extension has already been finalized. The Belgium international is a regular under coach Diego Simeone and is used both in defensive midfield and in central defence. Only four players in the Atlético squad have played more than 2,062 minutes.
