Falcao overtakes

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has shot to the top of the Europa League top scorers list. With his equalizer for Olympique Marseille in the 3-1 playoff second leg against Shakhtar Donetsk, the ex-BVB striker now has 31 goals. Aubameyang has now overtaken Radamel Falcao, who has scored 30 goals since the competition was founded in 2009/10.

Including the previous competition, the UEFA Cup, Aubameyang drew level with Sweden’s Henrik Larsson, who also scored 31 goals in the second highest European competition. With another goal in the round of 16, Aubameyang will be the sole all-time record. After his goal, the veteran also set up Marseille’s lead in the 74th minute through Ismaïla Sarr. With seven goals, Aubameyang is the top scorer in the current Europa League season.
From a German perspective, Dieter Müller (29 goals), Jupp Heynckes (23), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (22), Jürgen Klinsmann (22) and Ulf Kirsten (21) each scored more than 20 goals in the competition history. Florian Wirtz has been at the forefront since the Europa League was founded in 2009, increasing his tally to ten goals this season and passing his former Leverkusen colleague Karim Bellarabi (nine). He had previously pushed Lars Stindl (eight) out of first place.
