Ex-Bundesliga professional Jetro Willems is training at FC Groningen as a trial

Most recently at Greuther Fürth

“Give me two months and I’ll show it again: I’m one of the best left-backs in the Netherlands,” Jetro Willems (28) said in a “VI” interview in November. Time is up and ex-Frankfurter Willems, who was under contract with Greuther Fürth until September, may have found a new club. FC Groningen is testing the former international.

The Eredivisie club showed Willems as a training guest on Tuesday. On Monday he underwent a series of physical tests, according to a club statement. The club, known as the “Pride of the North”, will now use the coming days to see the 22-time Oranje professional on the training ground. Then it will be decided whether Willems can stay in Groningen in the coming months.

According to Willems, he made the decision to leave Fürth at the beginning of September in order to have peace and time with his family. “I went on a bit of a hiatus to sort everything out for a while. I’ve had a few intense years. with my injury. After that I had no more time for myself. No time to take vacations, to be free. I had other options, offers. I also disappointed some Dutch clubs. I made my choice,” said Willems, who tore his cruciate ligament while serving at Newcastle United in early 2020. By the time the statements were made in the autumn, Willems had already begun regular training to prepare for a new role.
