Even years after retiring, Germany’s former biathlon and cross-country skiing star Miriam Neureuther is still drawn to the snow. On Saturday, the 33-year-old was on the track during the descent in Kitzbühel.
Miriam Neureuther didn’t want to miss the classic on the Streif: While her husband Felix was there as an expert on television, the ex-athlete was in the spectator area. From there she was excited about the victory of the Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazin.
“About today,” wrote Neureuther on a video she published on Instagram. The post was tagged with a heart emoji. Another picture captured the picturesque view of the finish area with around 45,000 euphoric fans.
From their hometown of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Neureuthers are not far from Kitzbühel; the two towns are only about two hours by car from each other.
Emotional farewell to Thomas Dreßen
The descent was particularly emotional because of the farewell to Thomas Dreßen, who was greeted at the finish by many colleagues, companions and his family with his wife and child and carried on their shoulders despite coming in 46th.
“Enjoy this driveway again, this steep slope, even if there isn’t much to enjoy there. What a skier, Thomas Dreßen! The man with the greatest feeling in this World Cup circus. Now please just enjoy it. Listen to the spectators” , commented Felix Neureuther on the “ARD” microphone.
“That was the perfect day for me,” summed up a visibly touched Dreßen: “It was always clear to me that I wanted to have another nice trip and have fun. It worked out for me just as I imagined it would. I did I didn’t think it would be so intense.”
Miriam Neureuther was also there when Dreßen was celebrated by the crowd after his last appearance as a competitive athlete. She didn’t want to miss this highlight.
