Everything that counts as a work accident in the home office

From BZ/dpa

Still half asleep, trudging out of bed to your home office and twisting your ankle? Then it can be considered an accident at work – just like many other accidents that happen in the home office.

Whether at the kitchen table at home, on the train or in the hotel: mobile working has been possible in many professions at least since the corona pandemic. Quite a few employees make use of it.

But what about in the event of an accident?

In many cases, the statutory accident insurance then pays, according to the Schleswig-Holstein Bar Association.

This is always the case if the accident was based on a business activity that would have been insured with the employer at the workplace.

Accompaniment to daycare is insured

A fall, for example on the way from the bed or the kitchen table to the workplace at home, is an accident at work. The walk to the printer in the adjoining room is also insured, as is the walk to the toilet or the kitchen to get a drink.

However, according to the Bar Association, going to the toilet and eating are not insured.

Interruptions in working hours – for example to accept a private postal item – are also excluded from insurance cover.

However, the insurance pays if parents take their children to school or kindergarten and have an accident.

If an accident does actually occur in the home office or during mobile work, those affected should inform their employer immediately – preferably in writing, according to the Bar Association.

The accident should be described, photos taken and any witnesses named. The doctor treating you must also state that it was an accident at work.
