Everton FC’s point deduction reduced

A sigh of relief at Everton FC: Despite proven violations of the financial regulations of the English Premier League, the former European Football Cup winner only has six points deducted instead of the original ten and thus does not fall into the relegation zone.

The league announced the decision in the appeal process against the sanction imposed last November.

After the penalty reduction, Everton is now in 15th position in the table, five points ahead of Luton Town in the first relegation zone. However, Luton played one game less than the local rivals of the newly crowned League Cup winners FC Liverpool. Everton is also threatened with further trouble: in mid-January, the league opened additional proceedings against the Toffees after inspectors found that the permitted loss limits had been exceeded at the end of the previous season.

According to the Premier League’s sustainability and profitability rules, English teams are allowed to make a maximum loss of 105 million pounds (equivalent to 119 million euros) over a three-year period. However, an independent commission found that Everton made a loss of £124.5 million in the period up to the 2021/22 season.
