Evert Sanwaarden thinks that Bridget Maasland reacts very faintly to his gigantic Amalia blunder. “Bridget still had a bone to pick with me,” said the editor-in-chief of Privé.
It is perhaps the biggest blunder of Evert Sankrediets’ career. He put a huge photo of ‘princess Amalia’ on the cover this week, but it has since been confirmed that it is not about Amalia at all. And the Privé with that blunder cover is still on the shelves until next Wednesday: painful.
Bridget screams
There is a lot of gloating about Evert’s blunder. Story editor-in-chief Guido den Aantrekker tweeted: “Doesn’t even seem like it. (…) At De Telegraaf, they also regularly had trouble with the right Máxima. In any case, they are consistent on Basisweg. (…) Anyway, just read Story, folks, then you’ll know everything you need to know.”

Extremely painful
It is to Evert’s credit that he went through the dust in Shownieuws yesterday. “It is extremely painful. Of course I was the first to have desert sand in my eyes this week when I saw the same photo in Bild, the largest newspaper in Germany, and thought: we must have that for the Netherlands!”
He continues: “Well, ten million Germans read that newspaper, nobody noticed that it is not the real Amalia in that photo. He is part of a major report by an English photographer who is always in Lech, because a lot of prominent people come there and he followed Amalia there and took beautiful pictures of her.”

The photo of ‘Amalia’ with her boyfriend was also included. “I think, well, that’s a huge first. Isn’t it… And it’s not the boyfriend either. Yes, that is extremely painful. Of course you always try to push the limits of what you can do and to be controversial, especially as a weekly, because there are always privateers on the coast.”
“News travels fast, so now and then you have to unpack and take a risk, but not in this way. That is not good. Who was the first to point out Evert’s blunder? “This morning I was having coffee when Richard (van Shownieuws, ed.) called and I actually choked again. I had expected a response from the RVD, but not the announcement: ‘It’s not Amalia.’ It certainly didn’t look like that.”

Evert: “No, that’s also because there was something wrong with Bild. He wanted to sell that photo, but only blurted with that boy, because they expected problems from that family. That’s a very rich family. Then I sat down to see what could be with that boy, that I didn’t let myself be distracted by the fact that it might not be Amalia.”

Evert is disappointed that his magazine is still in the shop all week. “That’s the sourness of a weekly magazine. That poison cup has to be emptied all week. If you say it in a program, it will be gone tomorrow, but this will just be in the store for another week.
