Eventing in Luhmühlen: Young leader in the German Championships after dressage

As of: 06/17/2022 9:17 p.m

The German eventing riders are still looking for their master in Luhmühlen until Sunday. In addition to the DM, the international five-star test is increasing. The NDR broadcasts live on TV at the weekend and here on NDR.de.

The three-time Olympic champion Michael Jung once again proved his class on Friday and is riding towards a successful defense of the title. He is in second place with highlighter in the four-star test, which is also considered the German championship.

Only the American William Coleman with Chin Tonic is ahead of him. But he starts out of competition with a view to the German championship. Dirk Schrade from Heidmühlen with Casino took second place in the German Championships. In sixth place, former world champion Sandra Auffarth from Ganderkesee also kept her chances of winning with Rosveel.

The pre-decisive cross-country test will be held on Saturday. Olympic champion Julia Krajewski from Warendorf and Ingrid Klimke (Münster), who is starting at the same time in Barborowsko, Poland, have not registered for the national title fights.

Spectators allowed again

Top riders from a total of 21 nations have registered for the classic in the Lüneburg Heath, where spectators are allowed again, unlike last year. “It just needs this atmosphere and the riders are also happy to perform in the best possible way to the applause of the spectators,” said Julia Otto, Managing Director of the Luhmühlen tournament company.

The focus of the German starters is primarily on the four-star test, which is also about the German championship and the coveted starting places for the 2022 World Championships in September in Pratoni del Vivaro, Italy. International stars such as the British world number one Oliver Townend and his compatriot Tom McEwen are taking part in the five-star test. After the dressage, Bubby Upton is in the lead with Cannavaro.

Thomsen for the first time as national coach in Luhmühlen

New national coach Peter Thomsen, who knows the tournament well as a spectator and rider, is in Luhmühlen for the first time in his new role. “This is my home, my living room. It’s an honor and fun for every eventing rider to start there,” said the two-time team Olympic champion, who took over from Hans Melzer at the beginning of the year.

During his tenure, his riders won 34 medals at Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships (19 gold, 8 silver, 7 bronze). “It’s the challenge I wanted,” said Thomsen: “I hope I can fill in his footsteps as much as possible.”

Talents want to prove themselves

In terms of content, the 61-year-old sees one focus as bringing talent forward: “That’s the big challenge – to make the top broader and of course younger. It’s a long way.” For the talents, the World Cup is not yet an option. You can first prove yourself at the German championships this weekend.
