Eyes in the sun: beware of devices

«The screen of the devices electronics exposed to the sun reflects the rays like a mirror and harmful ones can converge on the macula, the part in the center of the retina, and cause a lesion,” he explains Scipione Rossi, director of ophthalmology of the San Carlo di Nancy hospital in Rome and secretary-treasurer of the Italian Society of Ophthalmological Sciences.

“The damage manifests itself initially with a sensation of clouding and, in the most serious cases, in a few days it causes a black spot and partial impairment of the visual field. The greater the exposure, the deeper the eye burn can be. In rare cases, the injury can lead to irreversible vision loss.

Even selfies can hurt your eyes

The expert he therefore advises against «taking selfies on the beach or in the mountains, where UV rays are more intense, staring directly at the sun. Just as the use of mobile phones and tablets to read or watch videos in full light and without protection must be limited.

The cornea or conjunctiva can also be injured by UV rays causing, respectively, photokeratitis and conjunctivitis. Symptoms? “Blurred vision, watery eyes, redness, pain and itchy eyes,” says Rossi. “If this happens, it is therefore necessary to immediately visit an ophthalmologist to assess the extent of the lesion and undertake the most appropriate treatment”.
