Even Americans enjoy Guus Meeuwis in New York: ‘Amazing!’

He did it: after London and Paris, Guus Meeuwis can also tick off New York. Most Americans missed the Brabant party in the Webster Hall, but whoever was there thoroughly enjoyed it. “It’s amazing,” says a woman from Brooklyn. “I don’t understand a word of it, but I love the music and the live instruments. It’s fantastic.”

From ‘New York, New York’ to ‘Brabant’ and from ‘Proud Mary’ to ‘It is a night’, Guus Meeuwis literally makes the Webster Hall vibrate. The polonaise is run several times, the beer flew through the air. The American security guards obviously don’t understand it, but they do enjoy it, they say.

“This is unique, this is historic.”

Dirk has been living in New York City for almost a year. He came to Webster Hall dressed as a soldier. “This is my outfit for Halloween, but I had more of a carnival feeling now. It feels like coming home, you don’t normally experience this in New York.”

“It’s fantastic. This is unique, this is historic. I live here, I work here, I am in the Netherlands and in New York”, says a frenzied Antonius. He is at the concert with his American wife. “It’s crazy that a Dutchman is here, but it’s beautiful,” she says.

“Music is universal.”

Kellie Cassone from Connecticut forgot the name of Guus Meeuwis just after the concert, but she enjoyed it. “I’m here because my friend is Dutch. I enjoyed it, great that he also sang American songs. I’m going to listen to his songs again and translate the words, because I didn’t understand anything.” Is the Webster Hall the right place for Guus Meeuwis? “He needs to be bigger, he can handle a much bigger audience. He has to go to Madison Square Garden, people are definitely coming.”

A few minutes after the last note, Guus Meeuwis is still speechless from the intense evening in New York. “In the beginning I wanted to sing in English for a while, but my English is Brengels (Brabants Engels, ed.) and so I continued in Dutch.” He is very happy that the Americans could also appreciate the Brabant party. “I was hoping so, because music is universal.”

Later today an extensive story about the concert of ‘our’ Guus in New York with a longer video report.
