Evacuations in Germany forest fire: ‘Track is full of explosives and ammunition’ | Abroad

The fire started on Friday and has already affected at least 100 hectares of land. The fire is now moving to the southeast and firefighters believe a major road could stop the blaze there. The fire brigade cannot enter the burning site to extinguish it on the spot, according to German media. The site was once an army training ground where people practiced with ammunition and explosives. In order to save money, the site was never cleared of any explosive materials left behind, such as explosives and ammunition. This could cause explosions on the now burning soil. The ‘Bundeswehr’ has sent several fire fighting helicopters to the area.

It is very hot in most of Germany, with the exception of the northwest. The Bild newspaper reported a record heat of 38 degrees, “5 degrees warmer than Málaga”, in the hamlet of Langenlipsdorf in the state of Brandenburg. Langenlipsdorf is only 20 kilometers southeast of the forest fire location.
