Australia’s east coast has been plagued by heavy rainfall since late last week. The floods have flooded areas and wiped out houses. In some places, as much as a meter of rain fell in a week. As a result, rivers overflowed their banks or burst through dikes, flooding cities. In places where it is dry, improvised evacuation centers have been set up in primary schools and recreation centers.

Nine people died in the state of Queensland and four in New South Wales, which includes Sydney. In the town of Lismore, New South Wales, the bodies of three elderly people have been found in flooded houses. The body of a fourth victim was found in the center. The death toll is expected to rise further.

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated due to the storm. The authorities have now issued an evacuation order for 62 areas around Sydney. This concerns almost 500,000 inhabitants.

Thunderstorms in Queensland and New South Wales meanwhile continue. These are accompanied by heavy rain, strong winds and possibly hail. Sydney and the surrounding area could experience ‘life-threatening’ flooding. According to meteorologists, the metropolis is dealing with the wettest summer in thirty years.
