Evacuation from the Ukrainian city of Mariupol failed again

MARIUPOL (dpa-AFX) – According to information from Kyiv, another attempt to bring people from the besieged port city of Mariupol to safety in southern Ukraine has failed. “It was not possible to reach Mariupol,” Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk told the strana.news portal on Sunday. The convoy remained in the city of Berdyansk because of air raids on Mariupol. “But we’ll try again tomorrow morning,” announced Vereshchuk.

So far, no attempt to transport relief supplies to the embattled city on the Sea of Azov and get residents out has been successful. Both sides blame each other.

In other places, however, escape corridors have been successful, said the politician. A total of 7,000 people were brought to safety from Sievjerodonetsk and Lyssychansk in the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, as well as from Irpin and Bucha northwest of the capital Kiev./bvi/DP/he
