DÜSSELDORF/FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) – The Lufthansa offshoot Eurowings wants to increase ticket prices by at least ten percent due to increased energy costs. That said the chairman of the board, Jens Bischof, of the “Rheinische Post” (Friday). The reason given by Bischof was that the higher fuel prices would burden the company with more than 100 million euros. Tariffs have risen by more than ten percent in the past three years.
“Flying is becoming more expensive and must also become more expensive – a look at the record oil price above the 100 dollar mark is enough,” said Bischof. “Accordingly, we will have to adjust our tariffs, which are already around ten percent more expensive than in 2019, by at least another ten percent. Otherwise, the burden of the oil price shock cannot be shouldered.”
With regard to the significant problems at airports, Bischof said, “the picture that our industry is currently giving does not satisfy anyone – least of all ourselves”. Every flight cancellation is one too many. “But what I can also say is that airports and airlines are working around the clock to improve the situation as quickly as possible.” In the meantime, flight operations have stabilized compared to the start of the summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia. Short-term cancellations are clearly on the decline, “although the general conditions will remain extremely difficult for the foreseeable future”./sl/DP/zb
