Eurovision Song Contest sees viewing figures drop despite successful S10: ‘Bagger!’

The Eurovision Song Contest has started. The first semifinal with the Dutch entry S10 attracted relatively few viewers yesterday. The criticism is therefore not tender: “Dredging show!”

With the first semifinal, the Eurovision Song Contest captivated almost 2.3 million viewers (46% market share) on NPO 1. At the end of the broadcast, it appeared that our entry Stien den Hollander (S10) has qualified for the final. Despite this successful performance, the viewing figures are a bit disappointing.

3 million for Duncan

It is the least viewed semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest with a Dutch entry in ten years. Last year we were directly in the final, but not in 2019. Then the semi-final with Duncan Laurence attracted more than 3 million viewers. A year earlier, in 2018, the semifinal with Waylon attracted 2.6 million viewers.

The semifinal with OG3NE attracted 2.5 million viewers in 2017, in 2016 the semifinal with Douwe Bob attracted 2.9 million viewers and in 2015 the semifinal with Trijntje Oosterhuis attracted 3.4 million viewers.

In 2014, almost 3.3 million people watched the semifinal with Ilse DeLange and Waylon, while the semifinal with Anouk scored 3.7 million viewers the year before. In 2012, when Joan Franka performed, 2.1 million people watched.

Strong criticism

The Eurovision Song Contest in Turin makes little impression in our country. “What a dredging show it was. I thought the screams, the screams, I hated the Italians’ decor to look at. I had Laura Pausini high, but that has become a kind of Addams Family mother that you are looking at”, Albert Verlinde responds in Shownieuws.

And Gerard Joling in Beau: “It was quite boring. There were also quite a few technical issues, with the light and such. The Netherlands can pinch itself with what we achieved last year, because this is with all due respect for Italy… In terms of production: no. If I compare it with how the Netherlands did it… Sorry.”

Carlo on two

The most watched alternative to the Eurovision Song Contest was the Carlo Boszhard show Married At First Sight with 896 thousand viewers (17%) on RTL 4. The public NPO 2 is in third place with Our Eternal Fight Against The Water (578 thousand) and News hour (565 thousand).

Only then will SBS 6 follow with 403 thousand viewers (8%) for 10 Voor Taal. Subsequently, the Meiland repeat attracted only 216 thousand viewers (4%).

Viewing figures

Other programs that did not make the top 15 include Hart van Nederland (460 thousand), Shownieuws (422 thousand), Tijd voor MAX (402 thousand) and HLF8 (310 thousand).
