Europol fears that weapons for Ukraine fall into the wrong hands

The European police service Europol fears that weapons supplied by the European Union to Ukraine will eventually fall into the wrong hands. Europol director Catherine De Bolle said this on Saturday in conversation with the German newspaper Die Welt am Sonntagabout which other German media to write† De Bolle makes a comparison with the Balkan war. Criminal gangs still use weapons that were used during that war. “We want to avoid such a situation,” says De Bolle.

Europol will set up a special international unit against the proliferation of weapons supplied before the war, according to De Bolle. “Because one day the war will be over.” The police service will also monitor suspicious movements of terrorists or violent extremists between Ukraine and the EU. According to De Bolle, Europol now has an unclear overview of these activities.

The EU announced two weeks ago that it would support the Ukrainian army for another 500 million. The total amount of military aid has thus risen to 2 billion euros since the start of the war in Ukraine. According to EU foreign chief Josep Borrell, the aid is intended for heavy weapons, such as tanks and artillery.
