Europe’s handball boss satisfied with EM

Bratislava (dpa) – Europe’s top handball boss Michael Wiederer does not see the sporting competition of the European Championship in danger despite the numerous corona cases in many national teams.

“In the end we will have a reasonable sporting result,” said the President of the European Handball Federation (EHF) in an interview with “Handball Week”. “Corona has influenced this EURO, yes. However, in the end nobody will say that one or the other team is only there because of Corona.”

In the German team alone, 15 players have been infected with the corona virus at the tournament in Slovakia and Hungary. Other teams are also reporting numerous cases. Nevertheless, the 66-year-old Austrian draws a positive interim conclusion of the European Championship.

The Omikron variant presented the EHF and the two host countries with new challenges in January and “brought surprises,” said Wiederer. “The biggest challenge was the different legislation and handling of Corona in the two host countries. But we managed that well and so I can draw a satisfactory interim conclusion.”
