European Terrace Survey: how much does a round of treats in European capitals cost | To eat

The average prices were investigated at various restaurants and cafes on the most famous terrace spots in European capitals – such as the Place du Tertre in Paris, the Promenade of Nyhavn in Copenhagen and Old Town Square in Prague.

The survey found that three Scandinavian countries – Norway, Denmark and Sweden – take the lead, followed by Ireland and the UK. Our northern neighbors close the top ten. Belgium is doing slightly better and is number twelve. Our other neighboring countries, France and Germany, are in eighth and eleventh place respectively.

For the cheapest terraces you have to be in Eastern Europe. The Hungarian capital Budapest appears to be the cheapest place to treat yourself (23.72 euros). Prices are also better than expected in Poland (17), Slovenia (18), the Czech Republic (19) and Slovakia (20); they round out the top twenty.

In terms of ‘terrace purchasing power’ – this was calculated by comparing the average disposable income in the country with terrace prices – Belgium is number seven with sixteen rounds per week. In the top five are Switzerland (26), Monaco (19), the Netherlands (19), Germany (17) and the Czech Republic (17). Lisbon and Zagreb are the cities with the lowest ‘terrace purchasing power’ with an average of eight rounds per week.
