European space probe starts long journey to moons of Jupiter today | Science

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, bigger than the seven other planets put together. About 100 moons revolve around Jupiter. Three of them have a surface of a thick crust of ice, with possibly liquid water underneath. If so, maybe life could be possible there, or life might have been possible there in the past.

Those three moons are called Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa, and that’s where the Juice mission is headed. The name is an abbreviation of Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer. It is the third ever mission to Jupiter.

To get to Jupiter, the probe makes a long journey through the solar system. It revolves around the sun in ever-increasing orbits, using gravity to gain enough speed for the crossing. In 2024, 2026 and 2029 it will fly past Earth and in 2025 past Venus. In 2031 he will reach Jupiter for the start of the research, and in 2034 he will fly on to the moon Ganymede. That’s where the mission will end. If all fuel on board is used up, the probe should hit there in 2035. It is the first time that a satellite will orbit a moon other than our own.
