The strong outsider Bernarda Pera won the tennis tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum.
In the final of the European Open, the 27-year-old American deservedly won 6-2, 6-4 against tournament favorite Anett Kontaveit from Estonia. While the world number 81. after the success in Budapest celebrated her second WTA title win within a week, Kontaveit, who was second in the world rankings and looked after by the German Torben Beltz, missed her first tournament victory on sand.
In the duel of the finalists, neither of whom had given up a set in the sand court event up to that point, Pera found the match better. She took three service games from her opponent and won the first set in 31 minutes.
The top seeded Kontaveit, who eliminated Andrea Petkovic from Darmstadt in the quarter-finals, improved in the second round, but made too many slight mistakes. In the end, the twelfth win in a row was perfect for left-hander Pera after 74 minutes.
Pütz-Aus in doubles
Meanwhile, the hope of a German success by Tim Pütz in doubles has not been fulfilled. The 34-year-old from Frankfurt and the New Zealander Michael Venus lost to the British Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara from Finland 4: 6, 4: 6. Their opponents in the final on Sunday are Rohan Bopanna from India and Matwe Middelkoop (Netherlands).
