European member states agree on more transparency in the Airbnb sector | Abroad

European member states have agreed on rules that should ensure more transparency in the sector of platforms such as Airbnb. The European Council reports this.

The European Commission wants more transparency in the rental of short-term tourist accommodation. She suggested that online platforms such as Airbnb share more information with local authorities and that the hosts of these accommodations are registered in the same way throughout the European Union. The Member States agreed to this. From now on, the platforms will have to automatically transfer customer data and the number of nights to local authorities every month.

Short-term rentals represent around a quarter of all tourist accommodation in the EU. The sector continues to grow and the corona pandemic has not slowed down its increasing popularity. In the first six months of this year alone, almost 200 million overnight stays were recorded in the EU.

Member States now have two years to transpose the directive.
