European Leagues is committed to the European Cup system: Super League “illusory”

40 professional leagues around the DFL

The merger of the European leagues has committed itself to the current Euro Cup system, but has demanded higher solidarity payments. After their General Assembly on Friday, the European Leagues called on the European Football Union UEFA to increase the proportion of payments to non-participating clubs in the European Cup from the current four to ten percent of income.

From 2024, the Champions League in particular will be played in a new mode that is intended to guarantee significantly higher income. Critics fear that the financially strong clubs will continue to outperform the smaller clubs. In addition, the European Leagues, an association of 40 professional leagues also with the German Football League, committed themselves to principles “that are sacred to our football.” This also includes qualification for European competitions based on sporting merits through annual qualifications in the national competitions based.

“We must not allow football to be weakened or endangered by short-term financial temptations or the realization of global power,” says another press release, with a dig at the potential organizers of the still planned Super League: “Any attempt by private institutions to represent a similar goal is illusory.”
