European League: Flensburg and Hannover-Burgdorf celebrate work victories

As of: November 14, 2023 10:37 p.m

The handball players from SG Flensburg-Handewitt and TSV Hannover-Burgdorf celebrated victories in the European League on Tuesday evening. The SG had a very difficult time winning 33:32 (13:13) at Elverum HB, but in the end the “warriors” clearly beat AEK Athens HC with 31:25 (12:14).

The 17-day break in competitive games was clearly noticeable for the Flensburgers. Things were anything but smooth for Schleswig-Holstein, with goalkeepers Kevin Möller and Benjamin Buric not having a good day.

The processes did not mesh with the guests. Although the Flensburg team repeatedly scored against the Norwegian runner-up, the SG was initially unable to gain a decisive advantage. One shortcoming was the exploitation of opportunities. Emil Jakobsen and Johan Hansen failed from the seven-meter line. It wasn’t until the 39th minute that left winger August Pedersen gave Flensburg a clearer lead with a score of 20:17.

But the Norwegians didn’t give up and countered to make it 26:25 (49th). In the end, the SG was a bit lucky that Elverum’s right winger Kasper Thorsen’s last throw hit the crossbar. In the end there was a hard-fought but deserved victory for the SG.

The best thrower for the Schleswig-Holstein team, who remain top of Group E with 6-0 points, was seven-time goalscorer Lasse Möller. Tobias Grondahl was successful ten times for the hosts.

The Flensburg team now has to wipe their mouths and prepare mentally for the top Bundesliga game on Saturday (6 p.m., in the video live stream on NDR.de) at home against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen.

In the European League, the SG will face Elverum again at home next Tuesday (8.45 p.m.).

“Recken” turn the game around in the second half

After the league exclamation mark against record champions THW Kiel, which the “Recken” defeated 36:33 in their own hall, the Lower Saxony team also achieved a home win in the European League. However, AEK Athens HC proved to be a stubborn opponent, especially in the first half. U21 world champion Justus Fischer scored seven goals as the best SG thrower. Stipe Mandalinic scored six goals for the guests.

“Not over 60 minutes, but in the second half it was a very good performance,” said Hanover’s sporting director Sven-Sören Christophersen in an NDR interview. “In the end we achieved a deserved victory in front of a great crowd.”

Only four TSV goals in the first 15 minutes

The Lower Saxons initially had a very difficult time on the offensive. In the first 15 minutes, TSV only scored four goals. This was also due to the good performance of guest goalkeeper Igor Arsic. The Serb had already made six saves halfway through the first period. Mandalinic, who was active for Füchse Berlin from 2017 to 2020, was particularly convincing in the Athens attack.

The Lower Saxony team were still 13:17 behind at the start of the second 30 minutes, then coach Christian Prokop’s team turned things around and so did the game. After 50 minutes the hosts led 26:22. This broke the Greek champions’ resistance and TSV confidently brought home their third success in the third group game.

Next Tuesday (6.45 p.m.) the “Recken” will travel to Athens for the second leg. Before that, the Bundesliga will be away against Frisch Auf Göppingen on Friday (7 p.m.).
