The European Football Championship takes place from June 14 to July 14 in Germany. 24 countries participate in this tournament. The match will be played in ten stadiums in ten host cities. The opening match is in Munich, the final a month later in Berlin. When is the draw? When are the play-offs? In which cities are the games played and which countries participate?
Is the Dutch national team already certain?
Orange is after the victory in Greece virtually assured of the European Football Championship in Germany, where it won the first and for the time being the only top prize in history in 1988. One more win over Ireland or Gibraltar, number 198 in the world, next month and the time has come. That is almost possible and should not go wrong again.
Even if the Dutch lose to Ireland and Gibraltar, they can still go to the European Championship if Greece loses to France on November 21. The Netherlands is about to participate in a European final round for the eleventh time. The current number 7 in the world rankings was absent at the European Championships of 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1984 and 2016.
How did the Dutch team do at the European Championships?
The Dutch team won the European Championship in 1988. Who doesn’t remember the orange-colored stands of that time in Germany? The failed opening match against the Soviet Union (0-1) and Marco van Basten’s three goals against England (3-1). Wim Kieft’s lucky goal against the Irish (1-0) and Van Basten’s punt in the semi-final against Germany (2-1). That victory was perhaps even better than the final against the Soviet Union (2-0).
The Dutch national team fell in the semi-finals of the European Championships of 1992, 2000 and 2004. The Dutch team finished third in 1976 and the quarter-finals were the final destination in 1996 and 2008. The Dutch team was already eliminated in the first round of the European final round of 1980 and lost all three group matches in 2012. More than two years ago, the Czech Republic was too strong in the eighth finals (2-0). It meant the end of Frank de Boer as national coach.
When is the draw?
The draw for Euro 2024 will take place on December 2 at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Which countries participate will depend in the coming weeks on the final rounds of the groups. Have so far eight countries have definitively qualified for the European Championship: Germany (host country), Spain, Scotland, France, Turkey, Belgium, Austria and Portugal. Thirteen more countries will be added until the draw. The last three countries are out of the play-offs.
Playoffs?
The draw for next year’s play-offs will take place in Nyon (Switzerland) on November 23. On March 21 and 26, 2024, twelve countries will play for three places at the European Championship based on their Nations League performance. As group winner of Division C, Georgia is so far the only country that is certain of a play-offs ticket.
In which cities and stadiums will football be played during the European Championship?
Germany has designated ten host cities and stadiums for the 2024 European Championship: Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Cologne, Hamburg, Leipzig, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen and Frankfurt. The opening match (with host country Germany) will be on June 14 in the Allianz Arena in Munich, the final will be played on July 14, 2024 in Berlin, at the Olympiastadion.
What does the pot layout look like?
