It has never been more expensive to emit CO2 than it is now. The price for European emission rights is 96.45 euros per tonne of CO2, a new record. Part of this price increase can be explained by the high prices for gas. These ensure that European energy companies switch to coal more often, and they emit two and a half times as much CO2 when burned as natural gas.
