European Championships: That was day 7 in Munich

Status: 08/17/2022 11:15 p.m

After the rain of medals, the German team remained without precious metal on the seventh day of competition. The table tennis singles give hope, the heptathletes are doing well too.

Climbing – Meul just barely missed the second medal

For a long time it looked as if climber Hannah Meul could follow up after her silver medal in bouldering and also win precious metal in the combination. But after the 21-year-old was still in second place after the first of the two disciplines, bouldering, she fell back to fourth place in the lead.

Beach volleyball – breathe easy at Walkenhorst/Lippmann

Breathe a sigh of relief at the newly formed duo around Olympic champion Kira Walkenhorst and Louisa Lippmann. After their opening defeat, the Germans were under a lot of pressure in the second group game. Walkenhorst/Lippmann withstood and, thanks to the victory against Kliokmanaite/Paulikiene from Lithuania, advanced to the second round.

After their second win in the second game, Karla Borger and Julia Sude, like Chantal Laboreur and Sarah Schulz, made it into the round of 16.

Isabel Schneider and Sandra Ittlinger came back from behind in their first match and got their first success. Robin Sowa and Lukas Pfretzschner also cheered. There were defeats for the duos Cinja Tillmann/Svenja Müller, Sven Winter/Paul Henning, Clemens Wickler/Nils Ehlers and Philipp Huster/Simon Pfretzschner.

Table tennis – German doubles for the first time since 2003 without a European Championship medal

Big disappointment in the table tennis doubles: All German teams are out. This is the first time since 2003 that Germany has not won a European Championship medal in pure doubles competitions.

It was better in singles. For the men, Timo Boll, Patrick Franziska, Dimitrij Ovtcharov, Danq Qui and Benedikt Duda made it into the round of the last 32. In the women’s category, Han Ying, Sabine Winter, Nina Mittelham, Shan Xiaona and Yuan Wan managed this jump.

Athletics – all finals without German participation

After the flood of medals yesterday, the German track and field athletes went away empty-handed today. The Germans were not even represented in one of the finals (400m, 110m hurdles (M), triple jump (M), pole vault (F), hammer throw (F)).

However, Carolin Schäfer and Sophie Weißenberg made a good impression in the heptathlon. After four disciplines they are in sixth and seventh place. The medal decision will be made in the final 800m run on Thursday (9:55 p.m.).

Road cycling – German starters without a chance

The Germans had nothing to gain in the time trial. In the women’s race, the German starters Lisa Klein and Lisa Brennauer clearly missed out on medals. The Swiss defending champion, Marlen Reusser, was the fastest to cover the 24 kilometers around the town of Fürstenfeldbruck in the Munich area.

In the men’s race, the German starters Miguel Heidemann and Maximilan Walscheid finished 16th and 25th. Walscheid, who had calculated his chances of a front place, fell on the first part of the course, the jersey was completely torn on the side. Nevertheless, he finished the race.
