European Championships: Great feelings in the Olympic Stadium – that was day 8 in Munich

From a German point of view, the eighth day of competition in Munich was all about athletics – with three medals. The Germans were also strong in canoes, table tennis and gymnastics.

5000m – Klosterhalfen becomes European Champion

In a long, tight 5000-meter race, Konstanze Klosterhalfen came out on top and was crowned European Champion. The 25-year-old shook off her Turkish competitor Yasemin Can on the last loop and won in 14:50:47.

“Incredible. It was one of the most beautiful runs of my life,” said Klosterhalfen at the finish after winning the first big title of her career.

Long jump – Mihambo is second

Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo just missed out on the gold medal in the long jump and won silver. The European Championship title went to Serbian Ivana Vuleta, who jumped 7.06m in the first attempt. In her second attempt, Mihambo came very close with 7.03m, but did not quite crack the distance of the surprise winner.

High Jump – Silver for Potye

In a strong competition, Tobias Potye won the silver medal in the high jump. In his home game, the Munich jumped 2.27m. Gold went to Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy. He cracked the 2.30m mark. Bronze went to Andriy Protsenko of Ukraine.

The German Mateusz Przybylko was also in the medal race for a long time. However, he failed at 2.27m.

Heptathlon – Schäfer Sixth, Weißenberg has to give up

In a competition with ups and downs, Carolin Schäfer came sixth in the heptathlon. After a poor performance in the long jump, Schäfer fell back to tenth place. But with her best performance of the season in the javelin throw and a strong final 800m run, the 30-year-old reported back.

After the fifth discipline, the second starter, Sophie Weißenberg, had to drop out. According to the German Athletics Association, the 24-year-old suffered from cold and exhaustion symptoms.

Canoe – six out of eight German boats reach Finale directly

At the start of the European Canoe Championships, six out of eight German boats reached the finals at the first attempt.

The 13-time world champion Sebastian Brendel and Tim Hacker won their heat over 500 meters in the canoe just ahead of Poland. Moritz Florstedt and Felix Frank, who just finished third at the World Championships Jule Hake and Jacob Schopf also progressed as the preliminary winners in the 500-meter kayak race.

The duos Tamas Hillmann/Martin Hiller and Caroline Arft/Julia Hergert reached the final over one kilometer.

Gymnastics – Germans reached team finals

The German gymnasts reached their minimum goal and qualified for the team final on Saturday. However, the Germans had nothing to do with the medal decision in the all-around when Britain’s Joe Fraser won.

Lukas Dauser finished ninth as the best German and qualified for the parallel bars final on Sunday. His teammate Nils Dunkel reached the final round on the pommel horse.

Table tennis – German quartet qualifies for the round of 16

For the first time since the 2003 European Championships, the German table tennis players had nothing to do with the fight and the medals in doubles. On the other hand, things went better in singles: four German players made it into the round of 16.

Top 10 ace Han Ying, European Team Champion Nina Mittelham, European Championship runner-up Shan Xiaona and Champion Sabine Winter are only two wins away from a medal.

Beach volleyball – three German teams in the quarterfinals

The beach party at Königsplatz continues for three German teams. The duos Karla Borger/Julia Sude, Chantal Laboureur/Sarah Schulz and Nils Ehlers/Clemens Wickler reached the quarter-finals.
