European Championships: Gold! Julian Weber triumphs in the javelin throw

As of: 08/21/2022 9:09 p.m

Julian Weber fulfilled his dream at the European Championships in Munich: he threw the javelin further than everyone else.

“Julian is a competitive type – anything is possible,” Boris Obergföll predicted during the competition. And the national javelin coach was right: In the fourth attempt on Sunday evening (08/21/2022), Julian Weber surpassed himself and threw the javelin a terrific distance of 87.66 meters.

He overtook the leading Jakub Vadlejch, who had been in front with 87.28 meters. And in the end, the Czech couldn’t counter any more – Weber was allowed to put on the European javelin throw crown. The Finn Lassi Etelätalo won bronze with 86.44 meters.

Finally a medal

Weber narrowly missed a medal in fourth place at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo and at the World Championships in Eugene last month.

Andreas Hofmann was disappointed, who stayed under 80 meters and was unable to meet his expectations in eleventh place.

Young meat in sixth place in the high jump

Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch only played a supporting role in awarding the medal in the high jump at the home European Championships in Munich. The EM third from Berlin 2018 managed 1.90 m in the Olympic Stadium and was sixth this time. Jaroslava Mahuchich from Ukraine (1.95 m) secured gold in front of Marija Vukovic from Montenegro (1.95 m).

Bronze went to 17-year-old Serbian Angelina Topic (1.93 m), daughter of former European champion Dragutin Topic.

Spain celebrates over 800 meters

The men’s race over 800 meters heralded the final Sunday evening in Munich’s Olympic Stadium. As the sprint relays prepared for their climax outside, Mariano García and Jake Wightman of Great Britain fought for the 800m title.

The Spaniard eventually took EM gold ahead of Wightman and Ireland’s Mark English. Favorite Andreas Kramer from Sweden started too late and missed the connection. This did not result in more than fourth place.

10,000 meters – three Germans among the defeated

Three German runners competed over 10,000 meters – but none of them could intervene in the fight for the medals. Nils Voigt was the best, Samujel Fitwi from Eritrea was ninth, Filimon Abraham ended up in the back field in 19th place. Yeman Crippa from Italy, a runner who was born in Ethiopia, took the win.
