European Championships 2022 – live ticker from Saturday, August 20th, 2022

10:29

Walk (F): Fast start from Zdziebło

Katarzyna Zdziebło shows in which direction things should go and immediately dictates the fairly high initial tempo. The Pole has already decimated the leading group badly. In addition to Saskia Feige, María Pérez from Spain is always up front and seems to be in good shape. But the walkers have only covered 2.5 kilometers.

10:22

Table tennis (M): Boll meets Qiu

A German table tennis highlight awaits the spectators from 10:30 a.m. in the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle. Medal contender Timo Boll will complete the quarterfinals against his compatriot Dang Qiu. In an interview with ZDF yesterday, the 41-year-old underlined his still high standards: “It is no longer a matter of course to achieve the high level it used to be. But I’m hot and ready.”

10:18

Walk (F): Starting shot for Feige

After the men earlier, the women are now also tackling the 20-kilometer distance. As the silver medalist from Eugene, Katarzyna Zdziebło of Poland is a favorite and is expected to face Britain’s Heather Lewis in the battle for victory. From a German point of view, only Saskia Feige from Potsdam is there.

10:13

Canoe (F): Spain ahead of Slovakia this time

Also over the 200-meter distance there was a similar result in the women’s K4. Here, however, the team from Spain kept the upper hand with a time of 1:36.656 minutes, just ahead of Slovakia. In the duel for third place, the quartet from the Ukraine prevailed over Sweden.

10:08

Canoe (M): Slovakia paddles into the final

After a short break, the next semi-finals are on the agenda at the Olympic regatta facility. In the men’s K4 over the 200 meters, the Slovakian boat qualified for the final with a time of 1:20.862 minutes ahead of the quartet from Spain. In third place in this race, which took place without German participation, Portugal also achieved this goal.

10:03

Walking (M): Positive conclusion from Köpp

In an interview with ARD, Leo Köpp was visibly pleased with his ninth place finish. “I am extremely satisfied. The best were the people from Munich and everyone else who came from Germany. The atmosphere here in the city center is phenomenal. That was the coolest thing under these conditions,” he said.

09:56

Walk (M): Bronze goes to García Carrera!

Behind Álvaro Martín and Perseus Karlström, Diego García Carrera made it to the finish and completed the podium in third place! Alberto Amezcua ends up in fourth place ahead of Francesco Fortunato. As the best German, Leo Köpp can look forward to a strong ninth place. While Karl Junghannß clearly missed the top ten, Nils Brembach had to end the race early because of three red cards.

09:50

Walk (M): Martín takes gold, Karlström with hat!

It is enough! Álvaro Martín from Spain shows no weakness at all on the last lap, brings a comfortable lead of twelve seconds to Perseus Karlström and celebrates the well-deserved gold medal. However, the Swede does not seem to be disappointed about the missed victory, who already grabs a Swedish Viking hat on the final kilometer and provides the most curious pictures of this competition.

09:45

Walk (M): Last lap for Martín

Still, Álvaro Martín already has a hand on the medal and heads into the final lap with an 11-second lead over Perseus Karlström! Behind them a Spanish duel for the remaining place on the podium is looming. Diego García Carrera is losing more and more time on Alberto Amezcua.

09:42

Walk (M): Korkmaz in trouble

In the case of Salih Korkmaz, however, the batteries are probably also empty. Francesco Fortunato and Alberto Amezcua fly past the Turk and gradually set their sights on Diego García Carrera. Meanwhile, at the front, Álvaro Martín looks around at Perseus Karlström, who is still clenching his teeth and keeping within reach.

09:38

Walk (M): Martín pulls away

Now Álvaro Martín also surpasses his compatriot Diego García Carrera and single-handedly storms to victory. Meanwhile, García Carrera seems to be in trouble, and within moments Perseus Karlstrom – who is fighting hard himself – is closing in on the runner-up again. A medal is suddenly possible again for Salih Korkmaz.

09:34

Go (M): Spaniards counter Karlstrom

Did Perseus Karlstrom gamble? Diego García Carrera and Álvaro Martín take over the lead after about 15 kilometers and immediately push hard on the tube. With a pained face, the Swede has to make a small hole from now on, but for the moment he is still in third place ahead of Salih Korkmaz from Turkey.

09:31

Go (M): Karlstrom chooses high risk

In the meantime, Perseus Karlström has managed to distance many of his competitors by increasing the speed numerous times. Only Diego García Carrera and Álvaro Martín can currently follow the Swede. Further back, Leo Köpp starts a small race to catch up and has at least improved to eighth place.

09:27

Go (M): Weigel sobered up after Brembach faux pas

National coach Ronald Weigel commented on the ARD microphone about the early end of his protégé Nils Brembach. “It’s an unusual situation for us. I don’t recall Nils ever being disqualified before. Maybe it’s because of the slippery ground that he didn’t quite get along with the shoes.”

09:22

Go (M): Tears at Brembach

Now it’s finally over! Nils Brembach collects the fourth and last warning and therefore has to end the race early. The German is immediately overwhelmed by his feelings and expresses his great disappointment. For Karl Junghannß and Leo Köpp, the precious metal seems to be slowly but surely out of reach.

09:15

Walk (M): Medal candidates soon amongst themselves

More and more athletes are falling behind at the top. In addition to Perseus Karlström and Diego García Carrera, Álvaro Martín and Alberto Amezcua from Spain, Italy’s Francesco Fortunato seems to be in good shape. Half of the 20-kilometer distance has now been completed.

09:09

Go (M): Bitter setback for Brembach

Nils Brembach received a time penalty due to three warnings and lost two minutes in one fell swoop. As a result, the 29-year-old from Berlin will no longer have anything to do with the decisions and is visibly fighting back tears. In the meantime, Leo Köpp has also lost touch with the leading group and is 19 seconds behind.

09:05

Canoe (M): Dräger/Florstedt storm into the final

In the K2 semi-final over 200 meters, Jonas Dräger and Moritz Florstedt will start today at the Olympic regatta facility! The German duo doesn’t miss a beat, wins the run in 32.506 seconds and qualifies for the final. The other two places are followed by Carlos Garrote and Cristian Isaac Toro from Spain and the Swedish boat with Theodor Orban and Petter Menning.

08:58

Go (M): German trio fights

The three German walkers fall back one after the other in the leading group to the end. First Nils Brembach leaves a gap after around six kilometers, a little later Karl Junghannß can no longer keep up. Only Leo Köpp is still clinging to the very fastest at the moment.

08:54

Canoe (M/F): double use for Dräger

On the Olympic regatta course, things get back to business in just a few moments. In the K2 semi-final over 200 meters, Jonas Dräger and Moritz Florstedt represent the German colors. Then, over the same distance, it is Fabian Schatz’s turn in K1, as is Dräger, who will go onto the water twice and want to catapult into the later final run.

08:49

Walking (M): Brembach and Co. are at the forefront

After four kilometers a 14-man lead group has formed. This includes Nils Brembach, Karl Junghannß and Leo Köpp. In the early stages of the race, Alberto Amezcua from Spain and Sweden’s Perseus Karlstrom dictated the pace at the very front.

08:43

Walking (M): German athletes have tough competition

In addition to Perseus Karlström, the three German walkers will probably have to keep an eye on the strong Spaniards in the first place. Álvaro Martín and Alberto Amezcua have already made people sit up and take notice this year with impressive season bests of under 1:20 hours. Diego García Carrera was only a blink of an eye missing on this route.

08:37

Walk (M): First starting shot of the day

The walkers have been on the move for a few minutes. The Swede Perseus Karlstrom, who won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Eugene a few weeks ago, is the favorite over the 20-kilometer distance. The German trio Nils Brembach, Karl Junghannß and Leo Köpp also don’t want to hide and are aiming for one of the three coveted podium places.

08:30

What’s next for athletics?

Away from the athletics competitions, things are really happening on the final weekend of the European Championships! Numerous canoe semi-finals are already on the program at the Olympic regatta facility in the morning, before the medals are distributed there in the afternoon. Beach volleyball will once again be played on the Königsplatz, with the German duo Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler aiming to reach the semi-finals. The Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle is the venue for the quarter and semi-finals in table tennis, and medals are also awarded in gymnastics and mountain biking.

The day in athletics

Plenty of precious metal will again be awarded in athletics on the penultimate day of the European Championships. In the morning the walkers look for the 20-kilometer champions, in the evening it is the turn of the 4×400-meter relays. There are also medals in the men’s pole vault and the women’s javelin throw, 800 meters and 300 meters steeplechase.

The last weekend

Good morning and welcome back to the European Championships! On the penultimate day, a number of decisions will again be made in Munich. From 8:30 a.m. it’s all about precious metal!
