European championship – national player Kühn: EM anticipation and corona worries

Berlin (dpa) – Handball national player Julius Kühn goes to the European Championship with his teammates in a positive mood – but the Corona worries will always accompany the team of national coach Alfred Gislason.

“You are already dealing with that. We are tested regularly, and each time you hope that none of us get caught,” Kühn told the newspapers of the Funke media group in an interview. “It’s really like it can happen to anyone. From one day to the next, the tournament can be over for any of us,” said the 28-year-old backcourt player from MT Melsungen.

One of the few “old hands”

Safety is therefore also a top priority for the DHB team. Anyone wishing to take part in the finals in Hungary and Slovakia, which begins on January 13, must be vaccinated or have recovered. Both of these must not be more than six months ago. This and the strict hygiene rules with constant tests should ensure that the tournament runs smoothly.

Kühn is practically one of the few “old hands” in the German EM team with nine debutants. But he doesn’t think that today “it’s the same as it was ten or 15 years ago. So that there are very clear hierarchies and the older players lead the way and everyone else orientates themselves to that,” he said. This is “no longer so extreme”.

He “just got the feeling that there is a very good team spirit here,” said veteran Kühn, who made his international debut in 2014. “Be it that we all sit together longer after dinner, be it during the evening together with darts or card games.”
