European border countries Ukraine condemn Russia attack

Eastern European countries bordering Ukraine have condemned Russia’s attack on their neighbor. “A brutal, unprovoked and unjust Russian attack,” Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said on Twitter. “A very serious violation of international law, of sovereignty and integrity,” said Romanian President Klaus Johannis.

Johannis says the attack “will be met with the strongest response from the international community” which he says will lead to “enormous consequences and costs for Russia”. Slovakia’s Prime Minister Eduard Heger said on Twitter: “In times when the democratic world wants to live in peace, Russia wants war. We are ready and will act united.”

Hungary’s foreign minister said on Thursday that war is the worst-case scenario. On his official Facebook page, he stated: “The task now, as always, is to ensure the safety of the Hungarian people.”

A Polish government spokesman told Reuters news agency that now is the time to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. “We expect such decisions to be made.”

“Russia is excluded from the international community,” said President Duda of Poland.
