European Athletics Championships: Tzengko follows Hussong

Elina Tzengko has replaced Christin Hussong as European Javelin Champion.

In the absence of the German defending champion, the Greek won on Saturday evening in Munich with 65.81 m ahead of Serbian Adriana Vilagos (62.01) and world record holder Barbora Spotakova (60.68) from the Czech Republic. Annika Marie Fuchs (Potsdam) missed the final by around three meters with 54.52 m and came eleventh.

The two-time Olympic champion Spotakova won the fourth European Championship medal of her career thanks to her best throw in the last round. The 41-year-old was already at the start 20 years ago when the European Championships were also held in Munich’s Olympic Stadium, but was eliminated in the qualification at the time.

Her great career then picked up speed: in her career to date, Spotakova has won three gold medals at the World Championships and the European Championship in 2014. Her world record (72.28) dates back to 2008.

Hussong had to cancel her EM start due to the consequences of a corona infection. Jana Marie Lowka and Lea Wipper were eliminated in the qualification.
