The countdown is on: In a few hours, the Europa League final between Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers FC will kick off. We answer the most important questions about the final in Seville – and about the possible celebration in the Hessian homeland.
The party is on, the tension is rising, the game can come: In Seville, the teams and above all tens of thousands of fans are getting in the mood for the final of the Europa League. From 9 p.m. (live in the audio stream from hr-iNFO and Hessenschau.de) Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers FC from Glasgow face each other. A final overview of the most important developments.
How’s the mood in Seville?
exuberant. And, very important: mostly peaceful and friendly. The Eintracht fan festival at the Prado de San Sebastian is currently filling up. There the finale at 9 p.m. will be prepared.
What’s in the past hours happens?
The city is getting crowded. And fuller. And fuller. Since the morning, more and more people from Frankfurt have been arriving in the city, one flight after the other landing in Sevila from Hesse. The fan festival started in the morning. There was also an unpleasant message: five Eintracht fans were arrested during the night. Otherwise there is exuberant anticipation.
What is the time until kick-off?
The starting point in the afternoon is the Eintracht fan festival. There, President Peter Fischer picks up the microphone at 4.30 p.m. and will swear the Hessian supporters to victory in the evening. This will be followed by a fan march to the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. The teams will also arrive there around 7.30 p.m. An hour and a half later, the showdown begins.
The stadium opens three hours before the game starts, i.e. from 6 p.m. Visiting fans are admitted via entrances A and B. Eintracht would like to point out the following to anyone wanting to get into the stadium: On the way, you have to go through several access and body checks, which are carried out by the police and the security service. Accordingly, sniffer dogs are also used at the entrance.
The club therefore recommends being at the stadium as early as possible, being patient and only carrying necessary items such as wallet, ID and mobile phone with you. In the stadium you can pay with cash and card. Canned and bottled food and drinks may not be taken into the stadium. Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is not permitted, no alcohol will be served. A digital COVID certificate does not have to be presented at the entrance. Wearing a mask is recommended in the stadium.
Eintracht will also celebrate the football evening in their own stadium. The 2006 World Cup arena is completely sold out for the specially convened public viewing, and an additional screen will even be set up in front of the stadium. Board spokesman Axel Hellmann said that up to 100,000 tickets could have been sold just for this event – that’s double the maximum that fits into the Waldstadion. In Frankfurt, the crowd watching should therefore be spread over the many (sometimes fully booked) pubs or private gatherings.
The final match will also be broadcast live on the Prado de San Sebastián in Sevila, the site of Eintracht Frankfurt’s official fan meeting place. The club strongly recommends that fans without a ticket stay at the Prado de San Sebastián after the Fanfest to watch the game together. There are plenty of places to get food and drink on site. Due to the very hot temperatures, fans should remember to bring enough water and sunscreen.
Clear answer: in the audio live stream from hr-iNFO and hessenschau.de. When the match kicks off at 9pm at Seville’s Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium, our on-site reporters will be on the air live. The game will of course be broadcast in full, including a possible extra time and a possible penalty shoot-out. Of course, hr-iNFO also broadcasts on the well-known VHF frequencies and DAB channels.
Then there will probably be very little sleep in Frankfurt and Seville. The outcome of the game will be decisive for Thursday. Because: If Eintracht loses the final, there will be no reception at the Römer. “You don’t celebrate with a second place. We did that in 2017 and that was a wrong decision,” Hellmann said. The Römer is only celebrated when you climb up or win a title.
To be on the safe side, weddings have already been canceled for this Thursday. In the evening, sometime (far) after 7 p.m., there will be a reception by the city and a presentation of the team and trophy on the Roman balcony if the winner is successful. The possible celebrations can be seen in a special broadcast on hr television in the evening.
The police are also getting ready for the big spectacle. “We look after the public viewing in the stadium like a normal football game, with the difference that no opposing fans are expected,” said a police spokeswoman. The situation will also be monitored after the game. “We basically assume that Eintracht will win and that the fans will celebrate exuberantly but peacefully.” In the event of a victory, it is expected that there will be “a kind of emergency” with massive traffic disruptions on Thursday.
The spokeswoman said there will be closures, especially in the city center and on the Römer, where the team is to be received. The city said: “Anyone who is not a football fan and does not want to celebrate with Eintracht is well advised to avoid downtown Frankfurt on this day as a precaution.”
