Manchester United recklessly gambled away a first-leg win against Sevilla in the Europa League. Feyenoord advanced against AS Roma.
Manchester United gave up a two-goal lead against Sevilla in the closing stages and had to settle for a 2-2 draw in the quarter-final first leg on Thursday evening (April 13, 2023).
Marcel Sabitzer has long looked like the match-winner for United at Old Trafford. With his goals (14th, 21st), the Austrian ensured the seemingly reassuring 2-0 half-time lead.
But in the closing stages, the Red Devils let the guests from Seville come back into play and robbed themselves of their good starting position: First, Tyrell Malacia deflected a cross from Jesus Navas to Sevilla’s connection (84th) into his own net. In injury time, Harry Maguire was unlucky as the United defender deflected a Youssef En-Nesryi header past keeper David de Gea to level.
Feyenoord Rotterdam was also able to present at home in the “De Kuip” stadium. Feyenoord defeated AS Roma 1-0 in the replay of last season’s Conference League final.
Mats Wieffer scored the decisive goal (53rd), who gave Roma keeper Rui Patricio no chance with a direct acceptance from a good 20 meters.
The Romans had missed the big chance to take the lead shortly before the break when Lorenzo Pellegrini (43rd) put a hand penalty on the post. The second leg takes place on April 20 (9 p.m.) at the Olimpico in Rome.
Juventus with a trembling victory against Sporting
The Italian record champions Juventus won 1-0 (0-0) against Sporting Lisbon. Just before the break, Juve had to cope with the substitution of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, who left the pitch visibly injured. The 32-year-old had previously defused several chances for the guests.
