The FC Bayern Munich basketball players suffered their third defeat in a row in the EuroLeague.
The team led by world champions Isaac Bonga, Andreas Obst and Niels Giffey narrowly lost 68:74 (35:33) to Red Star Belgrade in Serbia and missed out on the playoffs.
Alba Berlin suffered its fifth defeat with 71:79 (39:41) at Valencia Basket.
Bayern were leading in Serbia by up to 14 points at one point, but then completely collapsed offensively in the final quarter. In the fourth quarter it took over five minutes for FCB to score from the field for the first time, but in the end they only scored nine points.
20 seconds before the end, Yago dos Santos scored a three-pointer to decide the game in favor of the hosts. Bayern’s best scorer was former NBA professional Carsen Edwards with 16 points.
Alba also ran out of steam in the final spurt: the game between Berlin and world champion Johannes Thiemann was evenly balanced in the first round and with frequent changes in the lead. It continued like this in the second half, with Valencia only taking a decisive lead in the final section with a 16-2 run in the last four minutes. Guard Sterling Brown was Alba’s best point collector with 19 points.
Due to the bankruptcy, the Munich team only has two wins and four defeats, while Belgrade also recorded its second success. Berlin is back at the bottom of the table with just one win. The Berliners had already lost the first four games.
