Through large and small companies and suppliers, the Netherlands is a relevant global player in the research, development and production of semiconductors (chips). The government welcomes the so-called Chips Act, a proposal presented by the European Commission to support European ecosystems in this area.
Minister Micky Adriaansens (Economic Affairs and Climate): “Chips are essential now and in the future in all kinds of products, from alarm clocks and game consoles to cars and satellites. However, the innovations in this sector are also badly needed for other technologies such as quantum, artificial intelligence and photonics. European cooperation, including financial support, is necessary to keep this sector globally competitive and to ensure our prosperity and security here. The cabinet will examine the EU proposal in more detail, also to ensure that the market can continue to do its job itself.”
Earlier, the government made a starting amount of 230 million euros available for the Netherlands’ participation in a so-called Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) in the field of microelectronics. This IPCEI contributes to the objectives of the Chips Act and is aimed at strengthening the production chain and maintaining the competitive advantage of the innovative European tech industry.
