BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – The EU Parliament gives the green light for stricter rules on the use of data on networked devices. MEPs voted for a new data law in Brussels on Thursday.
To date, it has often been unclear who is allowed to do what with the data generated when using connected cars or refrigerators with Internet access. In some cases, the contracts stipulate that all data may be used by the manufacturer. The so-called Data Act is intended to give consumers, but also companies, more control over data.
The EU Parliament announced that this should prevent data leaks and make switching between cloud providers easier. The hope is also that repairs to connected devices, for example, will become cheaper. In addition, in exceptional cases such as flood disasters or forest fires, authorities should be allowed access to data owned by the private sector.
The project still has to be confirmed by the EU states, but this is considered a formality./rew/DP/men
