The European Union aims to issue more sanctions against Russia, but not sanctions that affect the Russian energy sector. This said the European Commissioner in charge of economic affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, in the northern Italian Cernobbio.
The EU has imposed economic sanctions in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, which began on February 24. Many European countries depend on the export of Russian gas to Europe for their energy needs. According to Gentiloni, the union will experience weaker economic growth than previously anticipated, but no recession as a result of the war. However, we will not achieve the forecast of 4 percent economic growth, said the European Commissioner.
