EU countries get 3.4 billion to care for refugees

STRASSBURG (dpa-AFX) – The EU supports those states that take in refugees from Ukraine with billions more. On Thursday in Strasbourg, the EU Parliament approved a proposal by the EU Commission according to which the payment of 3.4 billion euros from the so-called React-EU package, which is actually intended to deal with the Corona crisis, should be brought forward.

Ukraine’s neighboring countries – Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia – and those countries in which so many refugees arrived in the first month of the war that it corresponds to more than one percent of their national population are to benefit in particular. These are Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Estonia.

Since the EU states have already approved the proposal, they only have to formally confirm it again after parliamentary approval.

According to the UN, more than 4.3 million of the more than 44 million Ukrainians have left the country since the start of the Russian war in Ukraine on February 24./wim/DP/eas
