The restriction includes all synthetic polymer particles less than five millimeters that are inorganic, insoluble and resistant to degradation.

The European Commission will prohibit the sale of products to which they have been intentionally added microplastics, such as detergents, cosmetics or toys, among others, based on the Community legislation on chemical substances (REACH) to prevent the release of approximately half a million tons of these synthetic particles into the environment. For example, The prohibition of the Non-stick glitter or exfoliating microspheres will be effective in 20 days.

This new standard is part of Brussels’ efforts to meet its goal of reducing microplastic pollution by 30% by 2030.

The restriction adopted covers all synthetic polymer particles less than five millimeters that are insoluble and resistant to degradation. Its goal is to reduce intentional microplastic emissions in as many products as possible.

The scope of the new regulations includes granular filler material used in synthetic sports surfaces; cosmetics in which microplastics are used for multiple uses such as exfoliation (microspheres) or obtaining a specific texture, fragrance or color; detergents, fabric softeners, glitter, fertilizers, phytosanitary products, toys, medicines or health products, among many others.

Products used in industrial sites or that do not release microplastics during use are exempt from the sales ban, but their manufacturers will have to provide instructions on how to use and dispose of the product to avoid microplastic emissions.

Glitter and microspheres banned in 20 days

The first measures, such as the prohibition of non-stick glitter and microbeads, will begin to apply when the restriction comes into force, within 20 days. In other cases, the sales ban will be applied after a longer period to give affected parties time to develop alternatives and implement them.

Furthermore, where duly justified, exceptions and transitional periods will be applied to allow affected parties to adapt to the new rules.

Repeated scientific research has shown that microplastics are penetrating the human body, invading vital organs and endangering people’s health. These are particles that are present in more and more everyday consumer items, and that enter the human body through multiple routes, such as food and drink, but also through hygiene products, contact with everyday objects and others.
