EU and Israel plan energy partnership

TEL AVIV (dpa-AFX) – In view of the dependence on Russian gas, the EU wants to work more closely with Israel. “We are examining ways of intensifying our cooperation with Israel in the energy sector,” said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday in Beerscheva, Israel, where she received an honorary doctorate from Ben Gurion University.

The EU Commission announced in mid-May that it intends to conclude an energy agreement with Israel and Egypt on liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies for Europe before the summer. Large deposits of natural gas have been discovered off Israel. Von der Leyen travels to Egypt on Wednesday.

Von der Leyen also referred to the construction of a planned power connection between Israel, Cyprus and Greece in the eastern Mediterranean. In addition, a gas pipeline in the eastern Mediterranean is in preparation.

In the meantime, the project had almost been abandoned. A 1,900-kilometer-long pipeline called EastMed (Eastern Mediterranean Sea) is to route gas from Israel via Cyprus to Greece and thus to the European Union. Then it could be transported to Central Europe.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said after talks with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi that cooperation in the energy sector aims to enable gas from Israel to be used in Europe. Draghi is currently visiting Israel. He stressed that Italy also wants to reduce its dependence on Russian gas. In the evening Bennett wanted to meet von der Leyen.

The EU is trying to become independent of Russian gas supplies – both pipeline gas and LNG – as quickly as possible.
