Spanish cyclist Estela Domínguez has died from injuries sustained in a traffic accident.
The accident happened on Thursday in Villares de la Reina in the province of Salamanca, when a sun-dazzled truck driver hit a woman who was exercising with tragic consequences at half past seven in the evening.
Domínguez, 19, who rode his first year as a professional for the Sopela team, was considered a very promising cyclist. Last year, he finished fifth in the Junior World Championships in road cycling and also competed in cyclocross.
– Words are not enough to describe this. All my love to the family and loved ones of Estela Domínguez, especially her father, with whom I was a teammate at the beginning of my career. Rest in peace, Spanish legend Alejandro Valverde wrote.
Domínguez’s father Juan Carlos is a former professional road cyclist whose active career spanned the years 1995–2006.
