Esprit’s sustainability strategy: An insight into the circular economy

Introduction to the circular economy

Since its inception, Esprit, initiated by environmentalists Susie and Doug Tompkins, has always represented more than just fashion. Headquartered in Hong Kong, the company strives to push the boundaries of authentic and intelligent fashion through consciously designed collections. Circular economy has been a central part of the company’s strategy since 2018 and includes diversity, ethical principles and environmental protection. By anchoring the United Nations’ sustainability goals in its company philosophy, the fashion giant addresses economic growth, social integration and environmental protection.

Smart Design: Sustainable materials & animal welfare

The brand places great emphasis on the protection and humane treatment of animals. Products of animal origin must be produced in accordance with the Code of Conduct and Five Freedoms of the Farm Animal Welfare Committee. As part of the Fur Free Retailer program, the company completely avoids using real fur and relies on synthetic alternatives. The implementation of the Responsible Mohair Standard and the Responsible Wool Standard demonstrates Esprit’s commitment to sustainable materials. These standards not only ensure animal welfare, but also promote sustainable pasture management. By 2022, the company aimed to source 50% of its sheep wool according to the Responsible Wool Standard.

Responsible production: Transparent supply chain, responsibility for the planet and people

Esprit has consciously reduced the number of its supply chain partners to create close, responsible communities. The supply chain includes partners in 15 countries (as of 2021), with transparency guaranteed through regular updates to the supplier list and collaboration with the Open Apparel Registry (OAR). Compliance with human rights and social standards is ensured through risk assessments and audits.

Shipping and selling sustainably: CO2 footprint, reduction and waste management

The company relies on environmentally friendly transport methods and optimizes the utilization of means of transport. In particular, train transport is preferred to minimize CO2 emissions. Energy efficiency and waste reduction are also key aspects in the company headquarters and warehouses.

Extending product life: care and repair

Esprit promotes awareness of sustainable textile care through care instructions and the Clevercare system, with the aim of extending the life of products and reducing the ecological footprint. In Germany, the company offers a repair service for clothing items.

Reuse and Recycle: Recycling and Life Cycle Management of Garments

The company works to reuse materials from its products to incorporate them into the life cycle of new products. Both production waste and post-consumer waste are integrated into the circular strategy to minimize waste and use resources efficiently.
