Espanyol goes to ordinary justice for the VAR scandal last year

Hours after Justice recognized that the VAR omitted images keys in resolving a goal Griezmann which was key in the relegation of Espanyol, The Perico club issued a statement announcing the path it will follow from now on to defend its interests.

The blue and white club will undertake legal actions and will go to ordinary justice after two Madrid courts indicated that those responsible for the VAR of the match against the Atlético de Madrid of matchday 36 (3-3) will not act correctly. A Griezmann ghost goal It ended up being considered valid and deprived the parakeets of some points that would have been key in their objective of avoiding relegation.

Continuous fight

Melero Lopez, The referee of the clash validated the goal after going to the VAR. As confirmed later Clos Gomez, responsible for the VAR in that match, the only image they used to validate the goal was the one shown in the broadcast, but the court determined that other images were omitted that they could have changed that decision final.

Espanyol already challenged the clash at the time, but the competition committee dismissed his appeal. Now, after analyzing this latest failure with its juridical services, will continue its fight by resorting to ordinary justice, as explained in the following statement:

«Last Wednesday, courts No. 32 and No. 47 of Madrid, provided new evidence in relation to the events that occurred in the match between RCD Espanyol of Barcelona and Club Atlético de Madrid from matchday 36 of last season. After immediately placing the information in the hands of our legal services and once its analysis has been completed, RCD Espanyol, in light of the judge’s conclusions and from the analysis carried out, it has decided take legal action in the field of ordinary justice to defend the interests of our club, our members and our fans.

We understand that, given the evidence provided of the omission of images in a decisive play for that match and for the qualifying outcome of the season, it is our right and obligation to defend the interests from RCD Espanyol until ultimate consequences in this case in the judicial field.

The annulled expulsion of Vinicius

It is worth remembering that, already at that time, our entity challenged the match as we felt seriously harmed by that decision, also insisting on the precedent raised precisely in the other party referred to in the judicial ruling (annulling or leaving without effect the expulsion of the player from the Real Madrid Vinicius Juniorafter the omission of a series of images in the Valencia CF – Real Madrid CF match).

Today we know that what happened in that meeting (the concession of a goal to Atlético de Madrid that should never have gotten on the scoreboard) goes far beyond human errors understandable in the sports field. That decision and other situations, in our opinion still incomprehensible today, decisively influenced a decline of category that, we understand, we could have fought to avoid on the field of play in the last match against UD Almería.

For all this, and in defense of our institution and our social mass, “We take legal action to clarify what happened and to request compensation for the damage caused.”
