Esmée van Kampen is furious with the makers of The Traitors† The actress believes that she has been portrayed incorrectly, as a result of which she received the scorn of the viewers last Friday evening in episode 2.
“It really saddens me that a certain edit of me was chosen within the second episode of De Verraders and another was protected,” Van Kampen writes on social media in her Instagram Stories.
It got tough in the second broadcast The Traitors, the TV program of RTL 4 in which Dutch celebrities such as Faithful and Traitors play a game of trickery and deceit. Where Steven Brunswijk told in a speech about the death of his mother last week, this was discussed on Friday evening. The viewers saw, among other things, how Esmée van Kampen said to Brunswijk in the car: ,,I thought it was so low what Stefano just suggested. That you might be a traitor and that you would use the speech about your mother as a kind of empathy.”
This made it seem as if Van Kampen was spreading gossip and putting Stefano Keizers in the wrong light. In the car, Brunswijk reacted with disbelief. “That’s really low. It makes me toxic,” said the comedian who confronted Stefano Keizers. Keizers denied, after which Irene Moors at the so-called Round Table wiped all suggestions off the table. The viewers, however, stuck that Van Kampen was the evil genius.
Unjustly, she states resolutely on Instagram. “Picting me as someone who uses the death of someone’s loved one as a certain ‘means’ within the game is really disgusting and is the complete opposite of who I am and what I stand for. At the time of the recordings I had to say goodbye to people in my immediate environment who died of which I lost 1 loved one shortly afterwards. So you can understand that my tolerance towards the issue was non-existent and the reason why I acted as a ‘whistleblower’.”
Van Kampen received many nasty reactions following the events in this episode. ,,I’m sick and tired of the fact that ‘we’ as well-known Dutch people have to swallow everything that is written, edited or expressed about us. This isn’t cat pee, it hurts me because I wasn’t responsible for this, but unfortunately it seems that way now. I find it nauseating.”
Esmée van Kampen says in her Stories that she hopes that ‘the person in question whom I spoke to at the time within the program will one day take responsibility and admit that the game was being played too personally at that moment’.
At De Verraders, eighteen celebrities compete for a silver treasure that can be earned through assignments. Three of them are Traitors, who want to keep the loot for themselves. The rest of the group – the Faithful – must try to expose the traitors. Each night, one of the faithful is secretly “killed” by the traitors. That contestant is out of the game. For this, a vote is taken at the so-called Round Table to ban someone. The faithful hope that this will get the traitors out of the game.
The Traitors turned out to be an outright viewership hit last year, but emotions were already running high in Erenstein Castle. It is not without reason that candidates are mentally tested in advance and there is aftercare after participation. This entire second series has already been recorded. Actor Joep Sertons, who also participates (and is still in the game), said in an interview with this site: ,,My ability to put things into perspective was affected. How did I get home? I wanted to be alone for a while. There had been so much bustle, so much hassle. Some people forgot it’s a game. They made it their own reality. Then you get scared. Also from yourself, by the way.”
De Verraders is produced by IDTV and broadcast on RTL4. Following the statements of Esmée van Kampen, RTL was asked for a response. The broadcaster has not yet been able to respond.
