“Escalating number” of corona cases at Liverpool FC

Liverpool FC has requested that the semi-final first leg against Arsenal FC in the English Football League Cup scheduled for Thursday be postponed.

The reason is an “escalating number of suspected corona cases,” as the Reds announced. First-team training was canceled on Tuesday after further positive tests were found on players and staff.

In addition to coach Jürgen Klopp, regular players Roberto Firmino, Joel Matip and goalkeeper Alisson were missing in the duel at Chelsea (2: 2) on Sunday because of suspected corona infection.

Liverpool have now stated that other factors such as injuries and the surrender of players like Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita to the Africa Cup would affect the availability of players for the first leg at the Emirates Stadium.

“No prospect” of improvement at Liverpool FC

“With no prospect of the current situation improving or possibly getting worse ahead of Thursday’s game, the club think it would be wise and sensible to request a rescheduling of the game,” said Liverpool.

The English Football League said it would “make a decision as soon as possible once the circumstances have been fully examined”.
